Selling Items That Are Out of Stock (Allow OOS)

Last updated: October 19, 2026

What does “Allow selling if item is out of stock” do?

Every product (SKU) carries its own Allow out-of-stock (OOS) setting:

  • Enabled — customers and staff can keep buying the item even after its available inventory reaches zero. Use this for made-to-order, pre-sale, or always-available items.

  • Disabled (default) — once stock hits zero at the relevant location, the item becomes unavailable and can’t be purchased.

To mark one variant sold out, leave Allow OOS unticked for that variant and set its inventory to 0. The other variants keep their own stock.

How do I turn it on?

  1. Go to Products, find the product and click Edit.

  2. In the Variants section, tick Allow OOS for each variant that should keep selling at zero stock. Some browsers cut this column off; scroll sideways inside the Variants box to see it.

  3. Save. To apply it to many products at once, update each product’s setting (there’s no single global switch — it’s per SKU).

Keep in mind: with Allow OOS on, the item is treated as always sellable, so inventory can go negative (oversell). With it off, an order can be paused if a product isn’t available at the location tied to the order’s delivery method — you’d then restock, substitute, or wait for replenishment.

An item with Allow OOS on only shows on a POS location once it has an inventory record at that location. If it's missing at one location, add 1 unit there under Products → Inventory, then set it back to 0. With Allow OOS on, it stays available at 0.
