Why Customers Can't Check Out: Diagnosing Missing Shipping Rates

How to tell whether a checkout failure is caused by a missing or misconfigured shipping rate, and where to fix it.

Overview

If a customer gets stuck at checkout with no shipping option to select — or if an order fails to process — a missing or misconfigured shipping rate is one of the most common causes. This article walks through how to identify whether that’s the issue and where to fix it.

Symptoms of a Missing Shipping Rate

  • Customer reports they can’t complete checkout — the shipping step shows no options or is grayed out.

  • Customer sees an error like “No shipping methods available for your location.”

  • A wine club order fails to process or throws an error during package processing.

  • Checkout works for some states but not others.

  • Checkout stops working after you recently edited shipping settings.

Step 1: Confirm the Issue Is Shipping Rates

First, get two pieces of information (from the customer or the failed order):

  1. What state are they shipping to?

  2. How many bottles / what products are in the order?

Then go to Settings → Shipping and check whether a rate exists that covers that shipping state and the order weight or quantity. If you can’t find a matching rate, that’s your answer.

Common Causes

State not covered by any rate

The most common cause. If a customer’s shipping state isn’t included in any of your shipping zones or rate rules, Corksy finds no applicable rate and checkout fails. Fix: add a rate that includes that state, or add the state to an existing rate/zone.

Order weight falls outside configured ranges

If your rates are weight/quantity based (e.g., 1–6 bottles, 7–12 bottles) and an order doesn’t fall within any defined range, no rate applies. Example: you have rates for 1–6 and 13–24 bottles but nothing for 7–12; a 9-bottle order hits the gap. Fix: add or extend a rate to cover the missing range.

Product has no weight set

If your rates are weight-based and a product has no weight configured, Corksy may calculate the order weight as zero, which may not match any rate. Check this on newly added products and non-wine items (merchandise, gift boxes). Fix: add the correct weight to the product.

Wine club vs. eCommerce rates configured separately

Shipping rates for wine club orders are managed in the club tier settings, not general shipping settings. If a club member can’t check out or a package fails, the club tier’s shipping configuration may be missing a rate for their state or bottle count. Check the relevant club tier — this is separate from Settings → Shipping.

A rate was recently edited or deleted

Sudden failures — especially after changes in Settings — are often caused by a rate being accidentally deleted, a state removed from a zone, or a weight range changed in a way that introduced a gap. Review your current configuration for any states or ranges no longer covered.

Quick Diagnostic Checklist

  1. Does a shipping rate exist for the customer’s state?

  2. Does the rate cover the order’s weight or bottle count?

  3. Do all products in the order have a weight set?

  4. Is this a wine club order? If so, have you checked the rate in the club tier — not just Settings → Shipping?

  5. Were any shipping settings recently changed?

If the issue is still unclear, contact [email protected] with the customer’s state, product(s), and order total so the team can trace which rate is or isn’t firing.
