Use personalization to create targeted experiences that convert — based on time of day, location, device, referral source, visit count, and more. With personalization, you can display popups, new rows, effects, or notifications specific to a visitor’s context.
Personalization notes before you start
You must republish your site for any personalization rule changes to take effect.
Personalizations will not display on the public preview link. To test, use the “Choose Insite” option in the top bar, a new/private browser session, or a cleared cache.
Rules only trigger once every 30 minutes per user session.
Popups show only once per session.
Personalization is not supported on multi-language or dynamic pages.
How personalization works
A trigger defines who sees the experience (e.g., mobile users, visitors from Instagram, people in California).
An action defines what they see (e.g., a popup, notification bar, or festive animation).
Rules activate once the trigger condition is met and remain in effect for that session. You can combine multiple triggers for more targeted experiences.
Create a personalization rule
Option 1: Personalize an existing popup
In the side panel, click Personalize, then + Add Rule.
Select a pre-built rule or build your own.
Choose one or more triggers (e.g., “Location = Paso Robles”).
Click Next, then select Popup as the action and choose the popup.
Click Save Rule, then Republish your site.
Option 2: Build your own rule
In the side panel, click Personalization → Build Your Own.
Select and configure one or more triggers (specific time range, campaign URL, etc.).
Click Next, select one action type, and configure it.
Preview on all devices, name your rule, and click Save Rule. Republish to activate.
Personalization triggers
Combine triggers to create a customized experience. You can select one or more of:
Device — desktop, tablet, or mobile.
Location — where the visitor is browsing from.
Time — the time/date of the visit.
Visits — the number of times the visitor has come to your site.
Campaign URL — whether they arrived via a URL with specific query parameters (UTMs).
No trigger — the rule is always active.
Available actions
Popup — a modal popup (offers, email capture, event promos).
New Row — a page section shown only to certain visitors.
Notification Bar — a bar at the bottom of the site (promos, updates).
Special Effects — fun visuals like snowflakes, hearts, sparkles, fireworks.
Rule priority
Only one action of each type can be active on a page at once. If two popup rules apply, only the highest-listed shows.
Two different action types (e.g., popup + notification bar) can both show.
Same-action rules on different pages work independently.
Edit, activate, or delete a rule
Go to the Personalization tab.
Click the gear icon next to your rule.
Choose Edit, Activate / Deactivate, or Delete.
Example use cases
Goal | Example | Trigger |
Grow email list | “Subscribe for VIP Access” | First-time visitors |
Promote product | “Limited Release Now Available” | Show on product / shop page |
Event awareness | “Holiday Market Tickets On Sale” | Homepage, 2 weeks before event |
Instagram campaign | “Welcome from Instagram – Use IG10” | Referral source = Instagram |
Flash sale | “Today Only: Free Shipping” | Time-based (e.g., Monday 9am–9pm) |
Best practices
One clear goal per popup or bar.
Use urgency (“Ends tonight,” “Limited release”).
Don’t overuse — avoid fatiguing visitors.
Always preview on mobile.
Use campaign URLs (UTMs) to personalize ad traffic.
