Setting up Shipping & Tax Compliance

How to connect Automatic, Manual, Avalara, or SOVOS/ShipCompliant tax compliance — including why the provider dropdown is hidden until you disconnect, and what Manual compliance makes you responsible for.

On this page:

Changing your compliance provider

The provider dropdown is hidden while a provider is already connected. If you're on Automatic and want to switch to Manual (or vice versa), you won't see a dropdown at all — only options like "Enable CRV Tax" and Disconnect.

Click Disconnect first. The dropdown then appears and you can select the provider you want and click Connect.

The instructions below that say "select from the dropdown menu" assume you're either setting up for the first time or have already disconnected.

Connect Automatic Compliance

By connecting to automatic compliance, you understand that you must follow all local, state and federal laws.

  1. From your Corksy admin portal, go to Settings → Shipping & Tax Compliance

  2. Select Automatic from the dropdown menu Check "Enable CRV Tax" to apply CRV tax for customers in California

  3. Select Connect

IMPORTANT : For automatic compliance, we utilize Avatax by Avalara. There is no ability to modify unique tax rates by district, city, county or state when utilizing our automated tax system. If you have special tax obligations, we recommend creating an account with Avalara or SOVOS/ShipCompliant so you can have full control of your tax obligations by state.

Seeing tax for the wrong state on an order? Under Automatic compliance, tax is calculated by Avatax and can't be edited inside Corksy. If a rate looks wrong, contact support with the order number rather than changing your settings — switching to Manual to work around a single order means taking on responsibility for every state and product type (see the warning below).

Connect Manual compliance

By selecting Manual Compliance, you acknowledge that you are responsible for defining and maintaining accurate tax rates in accordance with all applicable local, state, federal, and international laws.

Manual compliance allows businesses to self-define tax percentages by product type, location, and shipping parameters, providing full control over how tax is calculated within Corksy.

  1. From your Corksy admin portal, go to Settings → Shipping & Tax Compliance

  2. If a provider is currently connected, select Disconnect so the dropdown becomes available

  3. Select Manual from the dropdown menu Check "Enable CRV Tax" to apply CRV tax for customers in California

  4. Select Connect

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Complete Tax Configuration Required

When using Manual Compliance, you must configure tax rates for:

  • All States you ship to

  • All Product Types

  • All POS Locations (for Pickup)

If a tax percentage is not configured for a specific State × Product Type (shipping) or Location × Product Type (pickup), the system will calculate 0% tax for that scenario.

Corksy does not automatically fill in missing tax rates under Manual Compliance.

It is your responsibility to ensure:

  • Every shipping state has tax set across all applicable product types

  • Every POS location has tax set across all applicable product types

  • Shipping rate tax % is configured where required

Failure to fully configure Manual Tax may result in under-collection of tax.
